    Composing – When can you start?

    Composing: When people talk about the art of knowing how to compose, the great classical composers of the past often come to mind.


    When you hear modern creators of music, but especially of songs, you hear very little use of the term, composition (composing), it is much easier to hear: write a song, write music.

    Let’s say that these two concepts in themselves, are not so wrong, in fact when we talk about songs, often with the phrase: write a song, you think of the lyrics of the song, or if you hear: write music, you can think of the fact of writing the notes.

    While these idioms are also operationally correct, I must tell you the truth, I have never agreed with the use of these terminologies.
    The reason lies in the fact that I have found them ever so much reductive, and in my experience, they do not represent incomplete form, what is the true art of composing, which is something much, much broader.

    I wanted to start with this premise because when talking about composition, I noticed that many people link this term, mainly to the composers of the past.
    Today it seems that, in people’s minds, the composer does not exist anymore, and that there are singers (who often do not even make the music of their songs, but more likely the lyrics), songwriters, who however often are not yet composers, or the term “artist”, which defines everything and nothing at the same time.

    This is a pity because actually still today there are composers, and you should know that in most cases, those who still make the most successful music/songs, are the composers, who many times are not performers and therefore it is someone else (for example the singer), who will be known by people.

    Unfortunately, the composer is often almost forgotten, but without this figure, there would be no new or different music, because all the other figures, not having the skills to do so, at most can reuse existing songs and try to re-propose them modified, in various ways, even with the help of other technicians, such as the arranger, who can also be a composer in some cases.
    Then there are artists who try to do it on their own without having these skills, but we often see somewhat strange results, and in the history of music, almost never do these artists manage to have a long career unless we have professional composers and arrangers behind us.

    With this, I don’t want to say that there are not singers or songwriters who are also composers, among the best artists we find this nice mix of skills. But often and in many cases this does not happen.

    It is not my intention now, and it does not concern the subject of the article, to give an “evaluation” on the quality of today’s music, because after all that is liked, is liked, and is son of the time in which we live.
    But what I wanted to emphasize right away is that it is sure and without a shadow of a doubt, to compose music you need to know how to do it, and all this can be learned only by studying and experimenting, even a lot.

    That said, and after clarifying that the composer is still today a very important figure, indeed fundamental to the world of music, let’s see a bit ‘when you can start composing, if there are limits, or if there are some basic characteristics that you should have to start composing.

    Let’s say that from the purely human side, intended as a capacity, there is no limit, there are no particular “talents” to have, except the desire to want to do it, and the more we have, the better we can do.

    So definitely, and like anything, wanting, having pleasure, having passion, etc., are a great start for those who want to compose as well.

    If we have these “characteristics,” we are already at a great starting point.

    But when can you start composing?

    The when is not intended in this case with a temporal concept, as there is not even a more suitable age, any age is fine, let’s just say that the sooner you start, like everything, the more time you will have to carry out what we would like to do!

    The when is to be understood in this sense: when it will be possible to start composing, after having learned (studied) music

    At this point, you may be thinking that in order to start composing, you will need to do a lot of musical studies, from theoretical to practical, and maybe even know how to play many instruments.

    Perhaps this is what most people, even musicians themselves, think. Perhaps it is also what is still thought today by professionals in the field, and even by the most classical conservatories, which, however, often still reason in very old ways

    But now I’m going to reveal something that I think will make you happy.


    In reality, in my more than 20 years of experience in the field of composition, I realized that it is possible to start learning composition, almost from the first day of studying music!
    Yes, you have to study music, it would not be possible to be a composer without starting to study music, but you don’t have to wait years and years, as people often think!

    I bet it will seem impossible, you will think (if you are a musician), that to learn to compose you must already know theory, harmony, and be able to play well or well enough at least one musical instrument.
    I am not saying that this would not make it easier, but it is NOT the real truth.

    Some time ago I began teaching composition to those who are at their first musical studies, thanks to a special method that I have created in years of study, and that allows you to carry on in parallel to the study of a musical instrument, including composition, in a very gradual way.

    Imagine how much more you could do if you started studying composition from the beginning!
    You could start devising, songs, music, very early on, knowing, little by little, how to do it.
    Don’t expect to be able to create a “worldwide” success after a few months, this is not “mathematical” in any case, not even by the greatest composers, but you would certainly have many more possibilities and time to learn how to do it!

    So to answer in a “definitive” way, the question: when can you start composing?

    It is possible to start as early as the first days when you begin studying a musical instrument.

    Comporre – Quando si può iniziare?

    Quando si parla dell’arte di sapere comporre, spesso vengono in mente i grandi compositori classici del passato.


    Quando si sentono parlare i creatori moderni di musiche, ma soprattutto di canzoni, si sente utilizzare molto poco il temine, composizione, è molto più facile sentir dire : scrivere una canzone, scrivere una musica.

    Diciamo che questi due concetti in se, non sono poi così sbagliati, infatti quando si parla di canzoni, spesso con la frase : scrivere una canzone, si pensa al testo della canzone, oppure se si sente dire: scrivere una musica, si può pensare al fatto di scrivere le note.

    Anche se questi modi di dire sono anche operativamente corretti, devo dire la verità, non sono mai stato d’accordo nell’utilizzo di queste terminologie.
    Il motivo risiede nel fatto che le ho trovate sempre così tanto riduttive, e secondo la mia esperienza, non rappresentano in forma completa, ciò che è la vera arte della composizione, che è qualcosa di molto, molto più ampio.

    Ho voluto iniziare con questa premessa perché quando si parla di composizione, ho notato che molte persone collegano questo termine, principalmente ai compositori del passato.
    Oggi sembra che, nella mente della gente, il compositore non esista più, e che esistano dei cantanti (che spesso non realizzano neppure la musica delle loro canzoni, ma più probabilmente il testo), cantautori, che comunque spesso non sono ancora dei compositori, oppure il termine “artista”, che definisce tutto e niente nello stesso tempo.

    Ciò è un vero peccato in quanto in realtà ancora oggi esistono compositori, e bisogna sapere che nella maggior parte dei casi, chi realizza ancora le musiche/canzoni di maggior successo, sono i compositori, che molte volte non sono interpreti e perciò è qualcun altro (ad esempio il cantante), che verrà conosciuto dalla gente.

    Purtroppo spesso il compositore è quasi dimenticato, ma senza questa figura non esisterebbero musiche nuove o differenti, in quanto tutte le altre figure, non avendo le competenze per farlo, al massimo possono riutilizzare brani esistenti e tentare di riproporli modificati, in vari modi, anche con l’aiuto di altri tecnici, come l’arrangiatore, che può essere anche compositore in certi casi.
    Poi ci sono artisti che ci provano da soli senza avere queste competenze, ma spesso vediamo risultati un po’ strani, e nella storia della musica, quasi mai questi artisti riescono ad avere una lunga carriera, a meno che abbiamo dietro compositori e arrangiatori professionisti.

    Con questo non voglio dire che non esistano cantanti o cantautori anche compositori, tra gli artisti più bravi troviamo questo bel mix di competenze. Ma spesso e in tanti casi questo non accade.

    Non è mia intenzione ora, e non riguarda l’argomento dell’articolo, dare una “valutazione” sulla qualità dei brani musicali odierni, perché in fondo ciò che piace, piace e basta, ed è figlio del tempo in cui si vive.
    Ma ciò che volevo subito sottolineare e che è sicuro e senza ombra di dubbio, per comporre musica bisogna sapere come fare, e tutto questo si impara solo studiando e sperimentando, anche molto.

    Detto questo, e dopo aver chiarito che il compositore è ancora oggi una figura importantissima, anzi fondamentale per il mondo della musica, vediamo un po’ quando è possibile iniziare a comporre, se ci sono dei limiti, o se ci sono delle caratteristiche di base che bisognerebbe avere per iniziare a comporre.

    Diciamo che dal lato prettamente umano, inteso come capacità, non c’è nessun limite, non ci sono “talenti” particolari da avere, tranne la voglia e il desiderio di volerlo fare, e più ne abbiamo, meglio potremo fare.

    Perciò sicuramente, e come ogni cosa, desiderare, avere piacere, avere passione, ecc, sono un grande inizio anche per chi vuole comporre.

    Se abbiamo queste “caratteristiche”, siamo già ad un ottimo punto di partenza.

    Ma quando si può iniziare a comporre?

    Il quando non è inteso proprio in questo caso con un concetto temporale, in quanto non c’è neppure un’età più adatta, qualunque età va bene , diciamo solo che prima si inizia, come ogni cosa, più tempo si avrà per portare avanti ciò che vorremmo fare!

    Il quando è da intendere in questo senso: quando sarà possibile iniziare a comporre, dopo aver appreso (studiato) la musica.

    A questo punto forse penserai che per iniziare a comporre, bisognerà fare moltissimi studi musicali, da teorici a pratici, e magari saper suonare anche molti strumenti.

    Forse questo è quello che la maggior parte delle persone, anche gli stessi musicisti, pensano. Forse è anche quello che ancora oggi viene pensato dai professionisti del settore, e anche dai conservatori più classici, che però ragionano spesso ancora con modalità molto vecchie.

    Ma ora ti svelerò qualcosa che penso ti potrà rendere felice.


    Nella realtà, in questi miei oltre 20 anni di esperienza in campo compositivo, mi sono reso conto, che è possibile iniziare ad imparare la composizione, praticamente quasi dal primo giorno dello studio della musica!
    Si la musica bisogna studiarla, non sarebbe possibile essere compositore senza iniziare lo studio della musica, ma non devi aspettare anni e anni, come spesso si pensa!

    Ci scommetto che ti sembrerà impossibile, penserai (se sei musicista), che per imparare a comporre bisogna conoscere molto bene già la teoria, l’armonia, e saper suonare bene o abbastanza bene almeno uno strumento musicale.
    Non dico che questo non faciliterebbe, ma NON è la vera verità.

    Già da tempo io ho iniziato ad insegnare composizione anche a chi è ai primi studi musicali, grazie ad un metodo apposito che ho ideato in anni di studi, e che permette di portare avanti in parallelo allo studio di uno strumento musicale, anche la composizione, in modo molto graduale.

    Immagina quante cose in più potresti fare se iniziassi a studiare composizione sin dall’inizio!
    Potresti iniziare a ideare, canzoni, musiche, molto presto, sapendo, un po’ alla volta, come fare.
    Non aspettarti di riuscire a creare un successo “mondiale” dopo pochi mesi, questo non è “matematico” in nessun caso, neppure dai più grandi compositori, ma sicuramente avresti molte più possibilità e tempo per imparare a farlo!

    Perciò per rispondere in modo “definitivo”, alla domanda: quando si può iniziare a comporre?

    E’ possibile iniziare sin dai primi giorni in cui si inizia a studiare uno strumento musicale.

    Hi, welcome to this article-presentation of this new section related to tips and tricks for the world of composing, arranging, mixing, audio editing, notation, and more.

    Until now I have always been dedicated to composition, and everything else that is related to this world on the practical side. That is, I have been exclusively dedicated to the creation of music of all kinds, arrangements, editing, and more for my own productions, or for those of other artists.

    I have to be honest, until now I had never thought to devote myself to the sharing of all that I have learned in over 20 years of experience in this field.
    But today, while I was renovating, indeed just completely redoing this site of mine, I said to myself: “But why not write some articles to give useful advice, even to other musicians or passionate composers, arrangers, or anyone interested in knowing a little of my technical experience?“

    It has happened to me many times in the past to learn something new from experts in the field, both directly and also a little through the internet (not much on the internet as you can’t often find very good or clear information).
    Maybe after all these years, it’s time for me to give some help, maybe to younger aspiring composers, arrangers, songwriters, and so on.

    I must say that I realized, thanks to years of work in a music store, which allowed me to know many musicians, that often the musician who is interested in these topics, it is very difficult to find information even on small tricks related to this world. He often looks for them on the internet with poor results, and often very little explained, or not very “practical”.

    When I happened to sell products related to the world of recording, I was asked many questions not only about the operation of this equipment, but also on how to use them at their best, and the various recording techniques.
    Then when I started to tell about my experience in recording studios and composition, arrangements, etc., I was also “flooded” with questions, sometimes very basic, about these topics.

    All this has made me realize that the world of composition and arrangement, however, is a world rather unknown, almost “unreachable”, to most musicians who have not made really dedicated studies.

    So to “conclude”, with this article I want to inaugurate this section of my site, where I will try to give useful tips about composition, arrangements, audio editing, notation, and everything that may relate to this fantastic world of composition!

    Before the greetings, I would like to apologize to all the people whose mother tongue is English, or who know English very well, because it may be that you will find some mistakes, syntax or otherwise, as unfortunately, my English is not so “good”, although I will try to write the best I can!

    Composizione: questo mondo misterioso

    Ciao, benvenuto in questo articolo-presentazione di questa nuova rubrica legata a suggerimenti e trucchi per il mondo della composizione, arrangiamenti, missaggio, editing audio, notazione, e molto altro.

    Fino ad oggi mi sono sempre dedicato alla composizione, e a tutto il resto che è correlato a questo mondo dal lato pratico. Cioè mi sono esclusivamente dedicato alla realizzazione di musiche di ogni genere, arrangiamenti, editing, e altro per le mie produzioni, o per quelle di altri artisti.

    Devo essere sincero, fino ad ora non avevo mai pensato di dedicarmi alla divulgazione di tutto ciò che ho imparato in ormai oltre 20 anni di esperienza in questo settore.
    Ma oggi, mentre stavo rinnovando, anzi proprio rifacendo completamente questo mio sito, mi sono detto : “Ma perché non scrivere degli articoli per dare utili consigli, anche ad altri musicisti o appassionati compositori, arrangiatori, o chiunque sia interessato a conoscere un po’ della mia esperienza tecnica?“

    A me è capitato molte volte nel passato di imparare qualcosa di nuovo da esperti del settore, sia in modo diretto che anche un poco tramite internet (non molto in internet in quanto non si trovano informazioni spesso molto valide o chiare).
    Forse dopo tutti questi anni è arrivato il momento che anche io possa dare un’aiuto, magari ai più giovani aspiranti compositori, arrangiatori, autori di canzoni e così via.

    Devo dire che mi sono reso conto, grazie anche agli anni di lavoro in un negozio di musica, che mi ha permesso di conoscere moltissimi musicisti, che spesso il musicista che si interessa di questi argomenti, fa molta fatica a trovare informazioni anche su piccoli trucchi legati a questo mondo. Spesso li cerca in internet con scarsi risultati, e spesso molto poco spiegati, oppure poco “pratici”.

    Quando mi capitava di vendere prodotti legati al mondo del recording, mi venivano fatte molte domande non solo sul funzionamento di queste apparecchiature, ma anche su come utilizzarle al meglio, e alle varie tecniche di registrazione.
    Poi quando mi mettevo anche a raccontare della mia esperienza in studi di registrazione e nella composizione, arrangiamenti ecc, venivo anche “sommerso” di domande, anche certe volte molto basilari, riguardo a questi argomenti.

    Tutto questo mi ha fatto capire che comunque il mondo della composizione e dell’arrangiamento, è un mondo piuttosto sconosciuto, quasi “irraggiungibile”, alla maggior parte dei musicisti che non hanno fatto studi veramente dedicati.

    Perciò per “concludere”, con questo articolo voglio inaugurare questa sezione del mio sito, dove tenterò di dare utili consigli riguardo alla composizione, arrangiamenti, editing audio, notazione, e tutto quello che possa riguardare questo fantastico mondo della composizione!
